Mom Jeans

What do jeans have that everyone loves them? The amazing Yves Saint Laurent once said “I have often said that I wish I had invented blue jeans: the most spectacular, the most practical, the most relaxed and nonchalant. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity – all I hope for in my clothes”. This is a perfect description to explain why jeans are irreplaceable and eternal.

Levi Strauss created them in 1873, originally to be worn by workers due to their high durability and resistance. Why do we call this particular fabric denim and jean? Its name is the result of the fabric’s origins. They were obtained from Nîmes, a city in the south of France – denim –, and from Genoa, Italy – jean.

Towards the end of the 60’s and 70’s the hippie movement integrated the denim fabric to their daily clothes. Comfort was the key to happiness. From those days onwards, it has been manufactured in so many different ways, creating shirts, skirts, shorts, overalls, trousers, jackets and even bags. Easy to customize, denim became a must in our closets.
In 1980, until approximately mid-nineties, mom jeans were an unfashionable type of the classic jeans. Their high-waist and loose legs shape were ideal for mothers who needed convenience and comfort in their everyday tasks.

It wasn’t until some months ago, that mom jeans reappeared on the streets. Nowadays, women are looking for a stylish and comfort (sport chic trend) way of living. So, the comeback of these jeans isn’t so rare. Oversize is the new thing. We don’t need to show our curves, we are putting away those skinny jeans, and tight up dresses and skirts. The exact same thing our mothers did in the 70’s, to let their souls be hippie and free!

As Leandra Medine may say: is the oversize trend transforming women in man repellers? We don’t really care, because fashion should let us express ourselves and be comfortable in our own skin, being able to cause a new and fantastic social revolution!

You can go for vintage and grab those old mom jeans in your mother’s closet, because everything is possible now!
