Get Your Fingers Green This Spring and Eat Your Own Veggies This Summer

Spring has sprung, at least it has in the South of Europe. That means seed sowing time is here and it makes us want to get green with our fingers. Nothing more beautiful than seeing life grow from something you planted yourself.

While doing my daily Pinterest session, I found many cool planting hacks. Did you know that you can basically use any type of veggie to create a full new plant out of it? I thought it was so cool to learn that and I can’t wait to try out some planting tricks myself – to get green fingers on my sunny balcony in Portugal. Who knows I will eat my own planted veggies this summer?

Do you get as excited as we got? We will go through some planting hacks together with you, so that you can start planting as soon as the sun comes out!

Avocado plant

Next time you’re eating an avocado, make sure to keep the seed, wrap it around a wet tissue and place it into a plastic bag for 3 to 4 weeks. Then place it in water and your seed will slowly grow out to a tall avocado plant. Such an amazing and cool plant!

Spicy pepper plant

I’m probably most excited to cultivate my own spicy pepper plant. I love spicy food, and basically add pepper sauce whenever I can. And besides that, a pepper plant looks extremely cute with it’s little red peppers hanging.

Take the little seeds from a red pepper and place them only a half centimeter under the soil. Make sure to keep the soil humid at all times – it can not dry out. It can take about three weeks before the plant starts to appear. And it will take a lot of time before the peppers will start turning red, but it’s worth waiting! Just carefully cut them off whenever you want to use it for cooking.

Make sure to keep them in a warm and sunny place. The peppers will stay soft when it’s too cold and dark for them. A sunny balcony like mine is perfect, but otherwise, you could make a little roof or plastic or glass to keep it warmer.

Strawberry plant

Another fun plant to grow yourself is a strawberry plant. And it’s easier than you think! Did you know that the little dots on the strawberry are actual seeds? Yup! You can just basically cut off a layer of the strawberry and put them in soil. Keep in mind that they like a warm environment, so if it’s still cold outside, it might be better to start planting them indoors until temperatures go up.

Onion plant

Askteamclean also goes through some planting tips and tricks from your kitchen waste. They show how you can reuse your onion top (yes, that part with the little roots on top) to create an entire new onion plant. How freaking cool is that? Definitely going to try this out.

And did you know that potassium in bananas speeds up growth? And nitrogen in tea promotes growth? You can use these for planting. Also, hair contains a lot of nutrients for plants. Yes, we are talking about your hair. So, what I would do from time to time: take hairs from my hairbrush, put them a bit inside the earth of your plant and add a bit of water overneath.

Tell us! Are you just as excited as us to start planting your own veggies this spring? We might be going to start today! Let’s keep each other updated about the growth of the plants and let’s make some delicious recipes with our own harvested veggies this summer!
