The Live-Your-Dream Mentality

CHATTANOOGA – In less than two weeks, my husband and I will be embarking on a five-month trip across Europe. Words cannot begin to describe the surreal excitement I feel. It’s not every day you can free yourself from the monotonous routines and restrictions and take five months to get wonderfully lost in the streets of Barcelona, to drink the wild air of Amalfi, to feel the hot sands of Santorini between your toes, to tour the Parisian headquarters of international fashion houses, to bike through the colorful streets of Amsterdam, to truly live your life. For as Oscar Wilde once said, “To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people simply exist, that is all.”

My restless, roaming spirit never allowed me to be complacent in any part of my life, whether it was school, blogging or relationships. As an active pursuer of knowledge and passionate lover of all things creative, I am not living unless I am learning, moving forward, improving. Travel is more than seeing museums, historical sites and landmarks; it is a permanent change that takes place deep within our minds and hearts and transforms our entire life. Sure, there are a million logical reasons not to do the thing that scares you most. But as someone once said, the most dangerous risk is the risk of spending your life not doing what you want on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later.

Some may view our live-your-dream mentality as irrational. Why spend so much money and energy separating yourself from reality if sooner or later society will force you to settle down? Why give up all the comfort and security of your current life only to return nearly broke, unemployed, without a place to live? To that I quote the words of one wise person, “We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.” Are we crazy? Maybe… Does the thought of the unknown fill us with fear? Absolutely! But if you never step out of your comfort zone, how will you ever grow? “It is in all of us to defy expectations, to go into the world and to be brave, and to want, to need, to hunger for adventure, to embrace change and chance and risk so that we may breathe the air of new places and know what it is to be free.” It is the people who wish they had your courage who will be first to point out the irrationality of your decision to pursue your dreams.
